Hudson Valley Teens Sponsor Art Exhibit, in Woodstock, to Benefit Orphans

photo 4.JPG

On Sunday, December 15th at 2:00 pm, One Voice Global, will be hosting a benefit art show, showcasing original paintings of three young Laotian artists from the orphanage Deak Kum Pah, in Northern Laos.

The event will be held at the Woodstock Art Association & Museum, and will include a panel discussion with local teen volunteers from area schools throughout the Hudson Valley and Catskills region.

The students on this panel are involved in the One Voice community and some have traveled to the Deak Kum Pah orphanage and met the three artists whose work will be on display.

photo 1.JPG

Panel members will discuss their experience with the the One Voice charity, the featured artwork of the three Laotian artists, and their experience of visiting the orphanage, as well as the recent transition of the One Voice for Laos organization into the new One Voice Global.

Sale of the paintings will raise funds to send the three gifted orphaned painters to art school next year.

With the help of One Voice Global and the local Hudson Valley community, Sensong, Kongless and Khuasong, respectively 21, 18 and 19, could achieve the amazing gift of a higher education, in a country where one's next meal is rarely taken for granted.

One Voice Global is a non-profit, humanitarian aid organization, based in New York Hudson Valley. Our mission is to help local teenagers develop the kind of mindset, skills, and abilities they need to become compassionate humanitarians, social activists and global citizens.

We accomplish our goal by improving the lives of orphans and other children in need through fundraising projects, cultural exchange, and onsite service visits to the organizations we serve.

Cassidy Kristal-Cohen is a junior at Rondout Valley High School and has been working with public relations for the One Voice organization for two years.

Thank You Raffy, Morgan, Emma, and Lauren!

Raffy and Morgan.jpg

Lauren and Emma.jpg

A big thank you to Raffy, Morgan, Emma, and Lauren for minding the information and donation table at Oriole 9, in Woodstock, this past weekend.

Altogether, $190 was raised to help support the children of the Deak Kum Pah Orphanage in Luang Prabang, Laos.

In addition to raising the money, Raffy, Morgan, Emma, and Lauren all had a chance to talk about the One Voice/Teens for Change project to lots of people -- many of whom were out-of-towners hearing about it for the first time.

And a big thank you to Luc and Nina, the owners of Oriole 9 for their continued support in helping One Voice communicate this very important message to everyone who enters their fabulous restaurant.

If you are new to this project and haven't seen the wonderful 9 minute documentary produced by Garland Berenzy, take a look. Inspiring!

The One Voice For Laos Cabaret!

MP900448759.JPG

Preparation began weeks before the Cabaret filled with long hours of work by a small committed team. As the night grew closer we were filled with nervous anticipation and excitement, all of our hard work surely paid off. The Cabaret was a beautiful collaboration of local performers and artists. Each performance was unique with its own stylistic flare that made the night truly special. Performers include Uncle Rock,
The Shandettes, Sequoia and Lucia, Caravan Kids, Harvey Citron, Dharma Bums, Marc Black, and myself. The Cabaret was a huge success; raising $1,500 to pay for a water filtration station for clean drinking water and a month's worth of medical support at the Deak Kum Pa Orphanage in Luang Prabang. The limitless generosity of the community was so moving and I am grateful beyond words for the cooperation and support that made the Cabaret possible. A special thanks to our sponsors Photosensualis, Sorella's, Peace Love & Cupcakes, Candlestock, Jonathan Kligler & Color Page, Woodstock Jewish Congregation, and H. Houst & Son.

Loop for Laos 5K Run: September 30th

LoopForLaos.JPG

by Emily Waligurski

Last October, One Voice for Laos successfully held their first Loop For Laos in the town of Woodstock -- the very first teen-organized fundraising event of the project.

Rachel Castellano and Caleb Rudge took hold of organizing, advertising, and putting on the run.

Throughout the 2011-12 school year, local Hudson Valley teens planned a number of other fun events that raised money for the Deak Kum Pa orphanage in Laos. Last year, altogether, they raised over $15,000 -- and four of the teens actually made the trip to Laos, in July, to work with the orphans there.

This year, a whole new group of students are taking on the Laos project.

We had our first meeting two weeks ago and brainstormed a bunch of new ideas to help raise money for the orphanage.

Caleb and Rachel, upon graduating from high school and entering college, passed down the responsibility of Loop for Laos to my friend, Kelly Ambrosch, and I, Emily Waligurski.

All summer we have been preparing for the run.

This year, the 3.5 mile run will be held on Sunday, September 30th at 9:00 am, starting and ending at Andy Lee field.

Pre-registrants pay a lower admission fee and, if they are one of the first 50, will receive a Loop for Laos T-shirt. Otherwise, runners/walkers can sign up from 8:15 - 9:00 am on the day of the race.

The goal of Loop for Laos is not only to raise money to help over 600 orphans, but to bring the community together in the process. We hope Loop for Laos can inspire awareness, health, wellness, and community unity!

Anyone can help us accomplish our goals by signing up for the run and encouraging others in the community to do the same!

Download Registration form

Local businesses can also play a part by sponsoring the event -- donating food, money, or supplies. Not only will they be helping the cause, but they will get their names on the back of the Loop for Laos t-shirts!

Download Sponsorship Form

Volunteers on race day are always welcome!

People of all ages and speeds are encouraged to join us on September 30th at Andy Lee Field in Woodstock, NY! Hope to see you there!

Teen Dance Party: June 15th

teens-dancing1.jpg

This is just a reminder to let you know that you are invited to a teen dance party at the Colony Cafe, in Woodstock, on Friday, June 15th, 7:00 - 10:00 pm

This is the third in a series of teen dances whose main purpose (besides having fun) is to raise money to improve the lives of 600 children living at the Deak Kum Pa orphanage in Laos.

Garland Berenzy will be the DJ.

The evening will also be a great way to celebrate all the efforts so many of you have made, this year, to help with the One Voice for Laos project. Thank you!

It will also be a great way to give a rousing send off to Jesse Ditkoff, Isabelle La Motte, Caleb Rudge, and Rachel Castellano, who will be making the trip to Deak Kum Pah on June 25th along with Hudson Talbott and One Voice Founder, Evelyne Pouget.

Admission is $8.00.

All the money collected that night will go towards buying art supplies and sewing supplies for the orphans and to fund a few local excursions for them that will be hosted by the Woodstock One Voice for Laos Team.

Hope to see you at the dance!

ED NOTE: This beautiful letter by Rachel Castellano, was just published in the Woodstock Times.

"I hope you've been following the amazing events the group One Voice for Laos/Teens for Change has been organizing.

We're a group of committed teens, working to fund raise for a united cause: an orphanage in Laos that's in desperate need of help. So far, we've raised over $7,000 from events and donations.

Our next event has been organized by Katie Martucci. She has created an evening with performers who include professional musicians such as Vinnie Martucci and Robert Burke Warren, along with some of Onteora's finest musicians.

The Shandettes, which includes Katie Martucci, Seraphina Mallon-Breiman, Edith Lerner, and the Onteora Sounds of Jazz, will be performing.

The musical night is tailored for all ages. It will be held on Friday, January 20th, at the Colony Cafe, in Woodstock, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Admission is $10 per person.

All proceeds go directly to the orphanage.

Come out and support, while enjoying an entertaining evening. As Jimi Hendrix once said, "If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music."

Loop for Laos a Huge Success!

Loop for Laos, a 5K fund raising event held in Woodstock, NY on October 15th, was a huge success thanks to the efforts of more than 20 local teens. Over $1,000 was raised (plus a whole lot of awareness about the orphans of Luang Prabang).

Hey! Did that dog pay the registration fee?

Coordinated by Caleb Rudge and Isabelle La Motte (with amazing T-shirt design by Jesse Ditkoff), Loop for Laos was yet another successful event coordinated by Hudson Valley teens in support of 600 Laotian orphans living on 15 cents a day.

These "next generation humanitarians", as One Voice for Laos founder Evelyne Pouget likes to call them, did a fantastic job on every level. They did the research, coordinated with Woodstock officials, promoted the event, enrolled local sponsors, designed the T-shirts, blogged about it, and ran.

Plus everyone had a great time in the process. Thank you, guys! You are totally awesome.

Loop For Laos: 5K Fundraiser in Woodstock, NY

276878_144892045603996_1142766897_n.jpg

On October 15, the culmination of several months of preparation will take place in the form of a 5 kilometer run through Woodstock, New York . The run or walk will be held to benefit the Laotian Deak Kum Pa Orphanage and the 600 children living there in formidable conditions.

This event was organized by teenagers in the group "One Voice for Laos", who hope to eventually travel to the country. Although most group members would love a chance to see the Deak Kum Pa orphanage with their own eyes and make a personal connection with the orphans, the teenagers understand that the best thing they can do for the orphanage right now is raise money.

Rachel Castellano and Caleb Rudge, both seniors at Onteora High School, developed the idea of having a charity run in the generous town of Woodstock to raise both money and awareness for their vital cause. Every dollar generated by this event, titled the "Loop for Laos", will go straight to the orphanage in Luang Prabang province.

With the help of Evelyne Pouget, the group’s adult mentor, they have nearly accomplished their task. Rachel and Caleb hope to raise a substantial amount of money through sponsorships from town businesses, generous citizens, and the entrance fee of $10.00.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate in the great event and support their cause. The first fifty people to sign up will receive a free t-shirt upon registering! Anybody who is interested in signing up, sponsoring the event, or finding out more should please E-mail Caleb Rudge at caleb.rudge@gmail.com.

Three Fundraising Successes Already!

fundraising.gif

Good news! One Voice for Laos' first three fundraising efforts have all been big successes.

The end-of-the-school-year dance party at the Colony Cafe -- skillfully organized by a core group of inspired teens -- raised $1240. Awesome music by the Paper Planets and the Daydreamers.

Oriole 9's fundraising lunch, hosted by Luc and Nina, was also a booming success. Great food. Great vibe. Oriole 9 was able to donate $950 to the Deak Kum Pa Orphanage.

And Claudia Hirsh, owner of the Woodstock's delightful Enchanted Manor, hosted a relaxed fundraising pool party and raised $440. Yes!

Plus, we've received anonymous donations of $85 (from Oriole 9 customers). The total raised so far? $2,700. Upcoming fundraisers include a 5K run, home concerts, and other surprises. Stay tuned!
