The Breath

The breath is
an invisible
umbilical cord
that connects
all of us
to a source
of great
nourishment.

there is a great story i read somewhere in the last year. it was either told by Swami Muktananda, Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, or maybe all three as it sounds like an old story that goes way backkkkk..... so far, i haven't heard Prem tell it...but don't be surprised when he does.....it goes like this: a man is imprisoned in a tall tower by the evil king. the man tells his wife to get a beetle, a long thread, a long string, a rope, and some honey. he tells her to tie the thread around the beetle, put the honey on the antennae of the beetle, and set the beetle on the tower. the beetle, smelling the honey, began following the scent, and began climbing up the tower. when she got to the top with the thread hanging down off her back, the imprisoned man told his wife to tie the string to the end of the thread. then the man pulled up the string, and again, told his wife to tie the rope to the end of the string. in this way he was able to free himself from the tower. i guess it's supposed to be a metaphor for the process of Self-realization wherein the breath is the thread......???? in his book Raja Yoga, Vivekananda talks about the breath being just a manifestation of what the Hindus called Prana, the life force, but that through it (Pranayama), we can contact the Prana. something like that. jai satchitanand
