The Upturn Is Upon Us!

OK. It's official. The Golden Age is upon us, as of the viewing of this video. Don't believe all the naysaying garbage of the media. Of course, there is always stuff to complain about, always things to improve, but there is also happiness, joy, and dancing. It all depends on what you're focusing on.

It is an amusing little shtick with lots of nostalgia-buttons to tap. For "white people" of a certain age. There are token appearances of "people of color" scattered here and there, and it seems to come from the UK. As charming and upbeat as this short film is, it reinforces the insidious heirarchy of race, mirroring the feel-good white world that can be yours with a little sunshine, absent non-white people. I realize that probably most (white) people will think I'm being ridiculous, hyper-critical, over-sensitive. That I'm missing the point of the film: "Change your attitude, change the world." Yes, I know how important it is to live each moment consciously, to find the true contentment inside, and how that affects what we do in the world. That includes seeing and recognizing the perpetuation of tropes, stereotypes and caricatures that demean or diminish or erase people. Failing to identify and challenge these stories does not serve to realize the vision we share. By the way, I'm reading Ta-Nehisi Coates' book and your new book concurrently. Both are quite extraordinary in their own way. I really do enjoy your posts, Mitch. If you're in the neighborhood next week, might see you, nod & a wink?
