What Does Peace Mean to You?

stevie-ray-mchugh.jpg

A few days ago, I emailed this slide show to some friends of mine and asked them to let me know what "PEACE" means to them. Many responded to my request -- each with their own unique description of peace. Below is the response I received from Steven McHugh, in Longmont, Colorado:

"I am at peace in my creative, spiritual flow. Inner peace, for me, is when my many inner selves are of a piece, aligned, tranquil and resonating -- speaking with one voice, resonating, at peace. Tranquility in the face of setbacks. Engine purring, no sputter, no backfire. Feeling joy in a cup of tea and delight in my divinity. Inner peace heals the soul.

Peace is also an exterior thing -- feeling the support and love of family and friends. Affiliation with like-hearted souls. Reveling in the beauty of nature, the magnificence of all creation. Dancing in the groove. Merging with the moment, external peace and inner peace are one.

PEACE

Waiting for water to boil,
I experience
the joy of a lifetime.

ENJOY THE RIDE!

zenzero2.gif

Some years ago, I heard Prem Rawat say something that I will never forget. It's at least 20 years later now and I still very much remember what he said and the message being conveyed beyond the words, speaking, as he was, to the all-too-common phenomenon of unnecessary hustle and bustle which I could definitely relate to, trying just a bit-too-hard at the time to "succeed."

Here's what he said (and I am paraphrasing):

"You're a passenger on a plane going 650 MPH and you're running up and down the aisles trying to get there faster."

Badaboom! Badabing! Got me! Nailed! That single sentence painted a picture that completely tuned me in to what was going on in my life at the time. So much effort I was making! So much sound and fury! So much frantic effort attempting to get results, when really all I had to do was relax and allow the journey to unfold. I was on the plane! It was moving in the right direction! There was a very capable pilot at the wheel! All I had to do was sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. This is not to say that NO effort was required. SOME effort was definitely required. But that effort was a simple one: GET ON THE PLANE! Running up and down the aisles (marketing! sales calls! proposals! emails!) was mostly nervous energy and the fear that, somehow, nothing of value would manifest in my life. The older I get, the more I realize that my task has always been to BOARD THE PLANE, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

Running up and down the aisles is not only unnecessary, it diminishes the joy of the journey.

Back to the Garden

190707_Manchester_Author_Livestream_rs_202.jpg

I'm sure there was a time back in the Garden of Eden before the biting of fruit, naming of lizard, and placing of fig leaf, when Adam turned to Eve or Eve turned to Adam and, in the delightful absence of language, greeting cards, or text messaging, found a simple way to communicate something real about their experience of being alive.

Ever since those halcyon days, we've been trying to do the same -- to express something basic, primal, and pure about what moves us and why we often linger in the gaze of another who lets us in just long enough to experience the blessing of being received, no strings attached.

It is into this space I find myself being transported upon seeing Prem Rawat -- a space that continues expanding the moment he leaves the stage. He's gone and so am I -- my body now a hologram, my heart a happy camper.

Stunned in my seat, I am completely still, infused, fulfilled, free, my blood a kind of overflowing champagne fizz.

I'm sure I could move if I wanted to, but I don't want to. The desire to go anywhere has vanished. All I want to do is sit here and soak up the feeling forever. My name, my plans, the details of my life all seem like odd relics.

I am driftwood here, washed ashore, something a curious tourist might find on a sunny day.

I breathe. I bask in the light of an interior sun now made brighter by the one I have no words for. I follow my breath like a happy drunk follows the dotted white line home after an endless night of celebration.

ANNOUNCING the Release of Prem Rawat's "Peace Is Possible"

41sSf0Zf3zL._SX325_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Prem Rawat's new book, Peace Is Possible will be published on September 1st, but it is available now for pre-order on Amazon. Here is the description of the book on Amazon:

"Global peace ambassador, Prem Rawat, has spent his entire life traveling the world to deliver one timeless message: Peace is Possible.

Conflict, he explains, takes place at three levels: between countries, between people, and finally within each of us as individuals. These levels are all interconnected. Hence the conflict that rages within a person will lead them to seek out conflict with another. Similarly, conflict between people of one nation is likely to result in conflict between many nations. So the first step to world peace is a simple one: we must first find peace within ourselves.

Peace is Possible draws together age-old stories which, as they have been passed down over generations, inspired and transformed the lives of millions. From the power of adaptability, to the importance of trust, to the sticking-place of courage, these are the messages that will change the world. For good."

The Biggest Global Crisis of All?

cosmic head 2.jpg

There are a lot of crises going on around the world these days: the Environmental Crisis, the Refugee Crisis, the Water Crisis, the Monetary Crisis and many, many others. But the biggest crisis of them all, perhaps the root of all the other crises, hearkens back to an IDENTITY CRISIS -- human beings simply not knowing who they truly are. Here's my just-published rant about this phenomenon in the Huffington Post. If you resonate with the article, please forward it to anyone you think might find it useful. Merci!

A Website That Is Timeless

tt-logo2screen-1.jpg

There are approximately one billion websites in the world, servicing the virtual needs of 3.6 billion people -- an astounding 40% of the earth's population. Given the fact that the average human being spends about three hours online, daily, human beings are living in cyberspace for an astounding 10.8 billion hours every day.

That's a lot of time. True. But time isn't the only game in town. There's also something beyond time. And for want of a better word, let's call that something else the "timeless" -- that which is lasting, ageless, abiding, permanent, unfailing, immortal, unchanging, and everlasting.

Recently I've discovered a website that addresses the essence of this timelessness in a most elegant way -- the appropriately named TimelessToday.

the-challenge.jpg

Launched in September 2016, this fresh, new site offers a breath of fresh air (and a healthy dose of inspiration) through the spoken and written word of Prem Rawat. And it does so in a way that avoids the kind of proselytizing and evangelizing that all too often accompanies these kind of high-minded efforts.

Clearly, the people behind the scenes at Timeless Today, a hardworking team of web savvy and multimedia professionals, know a thing or two about the modern-day mindset. Rather than create a one-size-fits-all website, they've created an online experience that offers something for everyone -- no matter what their religion, philosophy, or attention span: everything from two-minute audio teasers to in-depth 80-minute videos.

Though still in its start up phase, Timeless Today is already seeing results. To date, it has hosted more than 133,000 web sessions for people in 140 countries and continues, in it's uniquely upbeat way, to provide a variety of free, pay-to-download, pay-to-stream, audio, and video.

What does the future hold for the website whose mission is to reach all 7.5 billion people on planet Earth with a message of hope, peace, and humanity? No one really knows, but if you ask the TimelessToday team, you can expect the following:

- More free content on the website and Facebook page
- New and different themes
- A YouTube channel of free content
- The TT crew following Prem Rawat around the world and providing footage that will be made available in a variety of formats: streaming video and audio, and downloads from his interviews, conversations, and live addresses.

A PeaceCast of Millions!

e8fc19_f07ac077320c48f0b27b8268d9ebea26~mv2-1.jpg

The news industry has a mantra -- one that most of its customers are not all that familiar with -- "if it bleeds, it leads." Translation? Bad news sells. Which is why the average online, click-through rate these days on negative headlines is a staggering 63 percent higher than positive headlines.

But just because bad news sells doesn't mean that good news should be ignored. And by "good news", I'm not referring to the token article about a cat being rescued from a tree by a smiling fireman. No. I'm talking about the kind of good news that has the capacity to change lives for the better -- not just what people do, but how they experience life.

SkyLeaping.jpg

That's why the International Peace Day has become such a big deal in recent years. It has focused people on the good news. And one of the most dedicated groups of people to amplify this focus are the good people of PeaceCast TV -- a 48-hour livestream.

You might call what they do "programming." I don't. I call it deprogramming, because it helps pull the plug on the "dark side" and provides an opportunity for people from all walks of life to see things in a new light.

This year's PeaceCast TV livestream, in honor of the International Day of Peace, begins at 8:00 am on September 20th and continues for 48 hours. Available at fine laptops and smart phones everywhere. Give peace a chance!

What Does Fernando Magellan and PeaceCast 2015 Have in Common?

8-1.jpg

Here are a few things about September 20th you may not know:

1. In 1519, it was the day Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan set sail on an expedition to circumnavigate the world.

2. In 1946, it was the launch of the first Cannes Film Festival.

3. In 1977, it was the day the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was admitted to the United Nations.

4. In 2015, it's the day of the fourth annual launch of PeaceCast, a 48-hour global webcast of crowd-sourced music, film, dance, documentary, poetry, arts, and individual expressions, hosted by Michael Nouri.

If you are looking for an inspiring way to focus on the GOOD NEWS that is happening on planet Earth, here's your ticket -- a chance to begin celebrating this year's International Day of Peace and your own, individual commitment to a life of well-being, joy, and fulfillment.

PeaceCast is Coming!

iStock_000001033118Small.jpg

If you are a regular reader of this blog, there is a good chance you are committed to the pursuit of peace -- peace on the inside (your own well-being) and peace on the outside (a world that works).

If so, you will likely be inspired by PeaceCast, a global webcast scheduled for September 21st (the International Day of Peace), that will celebrate people's efforts around the world to make peace a reality.

Good news, in other words.

PeaceCast is a curator of user-friendly content on the subject of peace -- short videos in multiple genres (i.e. spoken word, music, documentary, dance, poetry, politics, humor etc.) that opens minds and opens hearts.

Submissions are open to anyone. Got something to say/sing/dance/, click here and make your effort to share it with the world.

Weekly updates on PeaceCast will be appearing on Heart of the Matter from now until September 21st. So keep tuning in.

PS: Last year, more than 870,000 people logged onto to PeaceCast, now entering it's fourth year. Spread the word. Let your friends and family know, so this year even more people will jump on board (which is way better then jumping overboard, eh?).

Let's all give peace a chance!

The PeaceCast Press Release

2528110.jpg

What follows is a recent press release that describes what PeaceCast is all about -- a very successful live stream that has now gotten more than 865,000 views in just four days.

MIAMI, Sept. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/: Most days the media is filled with an endless stream of news and entertainment based on war, crime, disaster and, apparently, insoluble problems. This weekend, one peace group, presents an answer on PeaceCast.tv.

On September 21st, the world celebrates the United Nations International Day of Peace with a 48-hour video marathon featuring some of the planet's leading peacemakers, activists and entertainers, along with hundreds of videos submitted by people all over the globe.

Individuals and more than 60 peace-loving organizations around the globe have joined forces to provide the world with a positive message: Peace is Possible. Peace is Real. Peace is worth it. You are worth it. This is the third annual global webcast for PeaceCast and it can be seen starting Saturday morning, September 20 at 8 am EDT, online at PeaceCast.tv

2424484.jpg

During the webcast, former Ambassador John W. McDonald shares the inside story of the historic events that led to Peace Day's creation in 1981 by the UN's first unanimous resolution.

Later, we hear from British actor and filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, the founder of PeaceOneDay. In 2001, he concluded a successful campaign to have the United Nations declare Peace Day a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. During PEACECAST 2014, Gilley holds a provocative conversation on the nature of peace with distinguished peacemaker Prem Rawat, who has traveled the globe for the last fifty years with the message that peace begins with each human being.

One highlight of PEACECAST 2014 is a remarkable and inspiring interview with endurance swimmer Diana Nyad. At age 64, and on her fifth attempt, Nyad became the first person to swim from Havana to Florida without a shark cage. She completed the almost 111-mile record breaking swim in 52 hours and 54 minutes.

In another probing interview, Edward James Olmos discloses the secrets of making peace in a life of acting and activism.

Throughout PEACECAST 2014, Latin music artists Fonseca, Diana Fuentes, Marta Gomez, Juanes, Periko and Jessi Leon, Adriana Lucia and Rosana speak out about what peace means to them.

This year's partners include Pathways to Peace, the Culture of Peace Initiative, Peace One Day, the National Peace Academy, the Institute for Multi-track Diplomacy, PeaceNow.org, the Global Peace Film Festival, O.A.R., PeaceBeats, PeaceDay.tv, Playing for Change, 350.org, The Prem Rawat Foundation, Words of Peace Global and Jeff Bridges' No Kid Hungry Campaign.

PEACECAST 2014 features moving performances by Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, O.A.R. and Emmanuel Jal, and the international street musicians of the non-profit Playing for Change organization. The webcast includes spoken word by British rapper/poet Mr. Gee with a poem that tells the truth about hip-hop, the art he loves. A special feature is the release of a new song, Fight for Love, written and performed especially for PeaceCast by Meuku, Kait Olson, and Yung of the Callie Swag District.

Filmmaker Lekha Singh is executive producer of PEACECAST 2014, and presents excerpts of her extraordinary film Beyond Right & Wrong, documenting the triumph of forgiveness in the face of war and atrocity.

PEACECAST.TV is hosted by activist actor Edward James Olmos, Latin music figure Kike Posada, and Premlata Rawat Hudson, senior Creative Producer for Words of Peace Global, which includes 11,000 volunteers throughout the world, working to make peace possible one person at a time. Throughout the webcast, Premlata will take viewers on a virtual world tour, visiting Peace Day celebrations in such far flung locations as Abidjan, Benin, Sri Lanka, France, Australia, Ecuador, and Florida.

Peace advocate, Michael Nouri, has been a spokesman for PeaceCast for the last two years. "Most days, we're bombarded by news of war, conflict and disaster, but to celebrate Peace Day, we're focusing on news of peace," Nouri explains. "You know peace is so much more than the absence of war," Nouri continues. "It's a feeling each of us can experience inside, and people around the globe are putting it into action in their own lives. That's what PeaceCast is all about."

For more information, please visit the website PeaceCast.TV. PeaceCast is supported entirely by voluntary contributions through the website Inspire More.

If you have 20 minutes and any interest in helping promote peace in the world, keep reading.

Stuart Hoffman and yours truly have recently put together a very cool music/slideshow/video featuring inspired quotes on peace from the various luminaries noted below.

If you can do this research in the next 48 hours and actually locate and download copyright free photos of the luminaries in our show, please email them to me: mitch@ideachampions.com. Also, include the SOURCE of the photo you are sending, so we know, for sure, it is legal to use.

It takes a village... and a few village idiots. Thanks!

Introducing PeaceDay TV

peaceday_globe_logotype_200.png

If you are planning on celebrating the International Day of Peace on September 21st, here is another good resource for you -- PeaceDay TV. A parter of PeaceCast TV, this inspired organization will be livestreaming 36 hours of content in celebration of the International Day of Peace -- two hours of which will be the "best of PeaceCast."

Peace Day TV was Founded in 2009 by the Light of Life Society for the purpose of providing broadcasting for peace-building organizations, inter-faith projects, and educational charities.

In 2011, Peace Day TV became recognized as a special project of the Culture of Peace Initiative, a UN-designated "Peace Messenger Initiative" with participants in all the world's regions. Their common goal is to unite the strengths of organizations and individuals who are working to make peace a practical reality.

Here Comes PeaceCast!

iStock_000001033118Small.jpg

At last count, there were something like 3,330 peace organizations in the world. While this may seem impressive at first blush, it's still 19,857 less than the number of Starbucks -- which is why I'm happy to have learned about the addition of one more peace organization on the scene -- PeaceCast

The brainchild of "an international cast of friendly volunteers", PeaceCast 2014 is one of several global initiatives dedicated to promoting the UN-recognized International Day of Peace on September 21st.

The concept is simple: collect peace-themed videos from all over the world and livestream them for 48 hours wherever it happens to be September 21st.

One of the cool things about PeaceCast is that it's content will be crowdsourced. YOU, your friends, neighbors, children, parents, co-workers, husband, wife, chiropractor, and the semi-employed film-maker across the street are all invited to submit something.

Any 10-minute-or-less expression that relates to peace will be considered -- original music, spoken word, dance, documentary, or whatever. And it doesn't have to be original. If you've found something on the web that inspires you, simply forward the link to PeaceCast. The sooner you submit it, the better chance it has of making it to the livestream.

Got peace? Share it. Don't got peace? Find something inspiring and share that. If not YOU, who? If not NOW, when?

A Surprise Collaboration with Vivek

140202_Delhi_VIP_mk_1118.jpg

This morning I received a surprise email from Vivek, a young man from India I have never met.

Vivek told me that he had recently discovered my blog, The Heart of the Matter, and really enjoyed some of the visuals featuring excerpts of Prem Rawat's talks.

Since Vivek and his team were helping to promote the Youth Peace Fest (an event where Prem Rawat would eventually address an audience of 183,500 people), he decided to make a video of the slides, add some cool music, and show it at colleges, offices, and other venues around India to get the word out. Vivek noted, in his email to me this morning, that the show was a "big hit with audiences."

Here it is.
